Portasol P-1 vs König Gas Heating Iron

The short answer

They are the same tool. Portasol build it in Ireland at the Oglesby & Butler factory, and supply it to König North America, who put their own name on it and list it as the Gas Heating Iron, part number 439001-420.

König list theirs at $99.00 plus shipping, quoted at 5-7 days. We sell the Portasol-branded original at $39.99 for the iron, or $69.99 for the four-tip kit - in stock, shipping from Denver.

Why the difference?

Nothing complicated - it is a rebadge. A manufacturer sells the same tool to several distributors, each of whom applies their own label and their own margin. You are paying for the name on the barrel, not for a different tool.

This happens throughout the touch-up trade. It is worth knowing which tools are the same before you pay twice for one.

What it does

The Portasol P-1 is a cordless butane heat tool. It refills with ordinary butane lighter gas, runs a full hour, and reaches 450°C. Fit the T-7 hot knife tip ($9.99) and it melts wax fill sticks into a gouge or a chip - which is how most furniture and cabinet touch-up techs work today.

If you want traditional burn-in instead - a catalyst head converting the flame to radiant heat, with a flat blade to spread it - look at the Iroda SolderPro range with an S-31 or CT-16 head. Different technique, not a better or worse tool.

Which should you buy?

  • P-1 Professional, $39.99 - the iron, a soldering tip and a cap. Lights from a flame.
  • P-1K Professional Kit, $69.99 - the same iron with four tips in a trade carton.
  • PP-1 Pro Piezo 75, $52.99 - steps up to 15-75 W, click-to-ignite so it lights itself in under 30 seconds, adjustable temperature and ESD safe.
